Geothermal Energy

Nickel Alloys for High-Enthalpy Brine and Sour Steam

Industry Overview

Geothermal fluid is the most chemically hostile naturally occurring fluid in industrial service: 150–350°C, 10,000–100,000+ ppm chloride, dissolved CO₂ and H₂S, and silica that precipitates as soon as the fluid cools. Duplex and super duplex handle moderate-enthalpy fields, but in high-enthalpy fields with pH below 4 and chlorides above 50,000 ppm the stainless grades are consumed in a few years. TOKO ALLOY supplies Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276 and Alloy 718 for the wellhead, surface gathering and heat-exchanger duty where the stainless envelope has already been exceeded.

Key Challenges

High-Chloride, Low-pH Brine at 150–350°C

Chloride at 50,000+ ppm combined with a pH below 4 removes the passive film from austenitic and duplex stainless at a rate that makes them a maintenance item. This is the defining condition where nickel alloy is not a premium but the only scheduled-life option.

Sour Geothermal Fields (H₂S)

Volcanic fields carry H₂S, making the wellhead and gathering system sour service. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 applies, and hardness control plus alloy selection both have to be documented — Inconel 625 and Hastelloy C-276 are the standard compliant selections.

Silica and Calcite Scaling

Silica precipitates on any surface cooler than the brine, and scale adhesion depends on surface chemistry as much as roughness. Alloy choice affects how tightly the scale binds, which determines how often the line is taken out for cleaning.

Thermal Shock and Expansion

Start-up and shut-down can impose 150°C+ differentials across a wellhead assembly. The material must tolerate that cycling without low-cycle fatigue cracking — a governing design case for the nickels rather than the stainless.

TOKO ALLOY Solutions

Inconel 625 Wellhead and Gathering (N06625)

ASTM B444 pipe and B446 bar for wellhead spools, surface gathering and two-phase flowlines. PREN > 45, strength to 980°C, and enough thermal-fatigue resistance to take the start-up cycling that cracks lesser grades.

Hastelloy C-276 for Acidic Brine (N10276)

ASTM B622/B619 pipe and B626 tube for the lowest-pH, highest-chloride fields where even 625 is being consumed — C-276 is the alloy that survives both the reducing acid and the wet chloride simultaneously.

Alloy 718 for Wellhead Hardware (N07718)

ASTM B637 / API 6A bar in the aged condition for high-pressure wellhead and valve components, combining 1034–1241 MPa yield with NACE MR0175 compliance.

Nickel Alloy Heat-Exchanger Tube

ASTM B704/B705 and B626 tube for binary-cycle and brine-cooling exchangers. Where titanium would be the conventional choice, Inconel 625 is the alternative when the same tube must also tolerate sour conditions that titanium cannot.
